CDL REQUIREMENTS

General requirements for each driver category. Individual carriers may have additional or different standards — your ATG recruiter will walk you through the specifics.

Requirements listed here are general industry standards. Specific carrier requirements may vary. ATG Recruiting will match you with carriers whose requirements fit your profile — at no cost to you.

CDL-A Driver Requirements

  • Valid CDL-A commercial driver's license
  • Minimum 21 years of age (23+ preferred by many carriers)
  • At least 6 months verifiable OTR experience (some carriers accept recent grads)
  • Clean MVR — no more than 2 moving violations in 3 years
  • No DUI/DWI in the past 5–10 years (carrier dependent)
  • Pass DOT physical and drug/alcohol screening
  • No more than 2 preventable accidents in 3 years
  • Valid medical examiner's certificate (DOT physical card)
  • Must be able to pass a road test with the carrier

Recent CDL-A graduates: many carriers offer paid training programs. Ask your ATG recruiter about no-experience-required positions.

CDL-B Driver Requirements

  • Valid CDL-B commercial driver's license
  • Minimum 18 years of age for intrastate, 21 for interstate
  • Clean MVR — no major violations in past 3 years
  • Pass DOT physical and drug/alcohol screening
  • Endorsements may be required (Passenger, School Bus, Hazmat)
  • Some positions require 1+ year local or regional driving experience

CDL-B positions are often local or regional with better home time. Great for drivers who prefer to stay closer to home.

Owner Operator Requirements

  • Valid CDL-A license with clean MVR
  • Own or lease a qualifying commercial truck (model year varies by carrier)
  • Active DOT number and MC authority (or ability to obtain)
  • Current IFTA and IRP registration
  • Proof of commercial trucking insurance (liability + cargo)
  • Passing DOT inspection — no out-of-service violations
  • 2+ years verifiable OTR experience preferred

ATG works with both lease-to-own and independent owner-operators. We'll help you find the best contract rates for your equipment.

Warehouse & Logistics Requirements

  • No CDL required for most warehouse and logistics positions
  • Forklift certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
  • Basic inventory and WMS (Warehouse Management System) experience a plus
  • High school diploma or GED typically required
  • Steel-toed boots and safety vest required on most job sites
  • Background check and drug screening required

No CDL required for most warehouse roles. ATG places pickers, packers, forklift operators, and logistics coordinators nationwide.
